2023 brought us some really incredible films like Oppenheimer, Barbie and Beau is Afraid. While these were all stand alone films, you might be surprised to find out that many of the most anticipated films of 2024 are going to be sequels of major blockbusters and fan favorites. While this is not a comprehensive list, these 16 films many will be waiting in line for!

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

When I heard this fact about the Godzilla franchise, my jaw fell to the floor. Did you know that this will be the 39th installment in the Godzilla franchise and the 14th for Kong!? Most have been filmed by Japanese production studios but if anyone has seen them all please let me know! In this film, we’ll most likely see Skar King, a simian Titan, as our main villain.

The Fall Guy

Release Date: May 3, 2024

Based on a series that ran for 5 seasons on ABC in the 80’s, The Fall Guy is a story about a stuntman who gets mixed into mystery and action when a big star from his former studio goes missing. With Ryan Gosling leading as Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt alongside him, we also have Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso and Winston Duke from Wakanda and Us in this star studded comedy-action film.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Release Date: May 24, 2024

Anya-Taylor Joy and Nicholas Hoult reunite for this film after starring in The Menu together in 2022. Chris Hemsworth is set to play Dementus, a post-apocalyptic warlord who will be our main antagonist in this flick. He is almost unrecognizable in the trailer. This Mad Max video game idea was allegedly stolen from George Miller. While he went on to create Mad Max: Fury Road which was released in 2015, many gamers who knew the origins of the game refused to purchase it, although those who caved reportedly call the game “a true gem.”

Bad Boys 4

Release Date: June 14, 2024

There has not been an official trailer released for this film or even an official title but they have finally started production late last year for Bad Boys 4. The filming is primarily taking place in Atlanta and Miami according to Collider.com. There have been some fan made trailers of this film but nothing released from the studio yet. On imdb.com there is a full cast list including Will Smith, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Eric Dane, Martin Lawrence and more. While there’s no official poster yet you can find some photos of the production on imdb as well.

Inside Out 2

Release Date: June 14, 2024

Inside Out was a hit with children and adults alike when it came out in 2015. In this animated film, we get a look into the inner workings of young Riley’s brain as her family moves to a new city and she deals with the pressure of always staying positive in a situation that is actually causing her a lot of stress. We were introduced to her emotions: Joy voiced by Amy Poehler, Sadness voiced by Phyllis Smith, Anger voiced by Lewis Black, Disgust voiced by Mindy Kaling, and Fear voiced by Bill Hader. In the 2024 sequel we will see all of these emotion-characters back with Fear voiced by Tony Hale and Disgust voiced by Liza Lapira as well as a new emotion for Riley: Anxiety voiced by Maya Hawke. Inside Out 2 will have a theater release and start streaming on Disney+ at a later date.

Twisters

Release Date: July 19, 2024

Daisy Edgar-Jones of Where The Crawdads Sing and Glen Powell from Top Gun: Maverick are set to star in Twisters. There is limited promotional material for this project yet as it is set to come out in the second half of the year. With a budget of $200 million it's has more than double the budget that the first Twister movie received in 1996. However, when you factor in inflation, the budget is pretty comparable. I’m really interested to see this movie and how it performs at the box office as the first film came in at more than 5x its budget!

Deadpool 3

Release Date: July 26, 2024

Fans of the irreverent anti-hero have been eagerly awaiting the next installment in the franchise since the release of Deadpool 2 in 2018. Audiences can expect the same signature humor and action that made the first two films such massive hits. This movie is rumored to explore even more of Deadpool's chaotic universe and introduce new characters, offering an exciting expansion to the franchise. Ryan Reynolds will obviously be reprising his role as Deadpool and I couldn’t be more excited to see him opposite Hugh Jackman.

Borderlands

Release Date: August 9, 2024

Borderlands is joining fellow video games such as The Last of Us and Tomb Raider as one of the animated stories appearing on the big screen in live action. With the cast including Ariana Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis and Cate Blanchett we can expect comedy to cross over with action in this film. Fans of the game are awaiting this trailer with bated breath as it has so much potential to be a summer favorite. You best believe we’ll be on the look out for first looks.

Beetlejuice 2

Release Date: September 6, 2024

Another sequel on our list that is sure to be star studded as well is Beetlejuice 2. The month before Halloween, this movie will be sure to get us in the spooky spirit, and maybe some theaters will even offer a double feature viewing. One can hope! Tim Burton became a household name after the release of Beetlejuice in 1988. With our favorite haunting young starlet, Jenna Ortega, playing Lydia’s daughter this film too will be on our must watch list of 2024, not to mention Michael Keaton reprising his role as Beetlejuice and Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, Beetlejuice 2 is one of a long list of films that has managed to get most of their main actors to return to produce a sequel. The fact that the first film came out 36 1/2 years before this coming sequel beats out the Top Gun franchise by a whopping 6 months for longest gap between sequels for live-action films.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Release Date: October 4, 2024

The photos of Lady Gaga dressed as a dystopian Harley Quinn with her hair slicked back were released last year. Fans of the DC universe and Lady Gaga have been anticipating the arrival of this film since then. Filming has officially wrapped as of April 5, 2023 and we have yet to get any real teaser or trailer. The first installment of Joker featuring Joaquin Phoenix was unsettling to say the least. We can expect with the eccentric and vivacious casting choice of Gaga as Quinn, part 2 will be even more mind-bending and captivating.

Venom 3

Release Date: November 8, 2024

I like Tom Hardy as a villain. That alone will probably make me want to go see this movie. All we can speculate at this time is that this film will connect to the MCU. If you watched Spiderman: No Way Home all the way to the post credits scene, you’ll notice Tom Hardy at a bar and a blob of the villain known as Venom was left behind.

Gladiator 2

Release Date: November 22, 2024

Rumors abound about a long-awaited sequel to the epic film Gladiator, set in the chaotic aftermath of Maximus' daring triumph in the Colosseum. With the original film's powerful performances and gripping storyline firmly etched in cinematic history, fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in Maximus' journey. As whispers suggest a plot delving deeper into the politics and power struggles of ancient Rome, expectations are high for a sequel that lives up to its predecessor. Although details remain scarce, we’ll be sure to share the trailer when it’s released.

Nosferatu

Release Date: December 25, 2024

Nosferatu (2024) will be the second remake of a film with the same name originally released in 1922. Lily-Rose Depp will lead with Bill Skarsgård and Willem Dafoe. It will be set in Germany, a nice call back to the original production. I’m a bit surprised that a film which was based on one so scary that it was banned in Sweden is coming out on Christmas Day as opposed to say around Halloween. It will be interesting to assess the actual vibe of this movie once we have a trailer later this year. It is categorized as Horror/Mystery. Robert Eggers has directed films such as The Witch and The Lighthouse which were both notably scary so we can expect this film to follow in this footsteps as he directs this star studded cast.
